» US-101 from Orick, CA to Beverly Beach, OR
Distance: 215 miles
Excursions: 18
miles
Trip Total: 2544 miles
In the morning,
Jenn experienced running on the beach for the first time (sandy and
lots
of scrambling
over
rocks
since
the
tide
was in)
and Rob took quite a few photographs. We packed up and headed north
along the coast to Newport and Beverly
Beach State Park.
We stopped along the way to walk on the sand dunes. The Oregon
Dunes National Recreation Area covers a major portion of the
southern Oregon coast, from Coos Bay to Florence. After battling
the glare, we continued along Highway 101 to
just
north of Florence, where we played tourists at the Sea
Lion Caves,
and took some photos of Heceta
Head Lighthouse, perhaps the most photographed
lighthouse in Oregon.
On the road again for a few of hours to Beverly Beach State Park,
about eight miles north of Newport. We met up with Kevin and Colleen,
Rob's friends from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
We had a laugh over our almost-matching red Subaru Foresters.
Kevin and Colleen were among the group that planned the weekend getaway
in the ocean-front cabin in Westport, Washington. They
had driven out from Madison, Wisconsin and were tooling around the
Pacific Northwest before
heading
off
to Washington
for Thursday's gathering.
We all headed off to Newport to visit the Rogue
Brewery for some dinner.
And some Rogue beer, of course, which is available in Austin, we
were pleased to discover on
our
return. (Favorites include Dead
Guy Ale and Shakespeare
Stout.)
We lighted a fire after we got back to the campground and longed
for some marshmallows before hitting the sleeping bags for the night.
