Date:24 July - 29 July 2006 Log:Jenn's Mom had a doctor's appointment this morning, so we had said our goodbyes the night before in case we didn't get packed up in time to see her before she left. As it turned out, Jenn went over to Mom's house for breakfast, while Rob packed up at Grandma's house. After a vexing search for gas in Barkeyville (long lines at the pump), we were off to Silver Spring, MD to visit our friends Jill and Steve. We got to Silver Spring that afternoon, and got the grand tour of town. The Discovery Channel is headquartered there, and it's "Shark Week" lent a palpable sense of excitement to the town. We also stopped by the house our friends Betsy and Kumar would soon be occupying. They were moving out of Austin during our vacation and moving to Silver Spring, so we wanted to see where they would be living. They have a very inviting front porch on the new place, so we let ourselves onto the property and checked it for ourselves. After coming back to J&S's for a cookout, we hopped into their car and scoped out D.C.'s monuments ending at Thomas Jefferson's (Rob's personal favorite). Tuesday, we got up and headed to Chappel Hill, North Carolina to visit Kim and Chris. We had some software on our laptop called Route 66 that had maps of the US (it's kind of like having Mapquest on your hard drive). We used this to find the houses of all our friends, and it came in handy when flash floods closed down the main road to K&C's house. Anyways, neither of us had been to Chappel Hill before, and we both really liked it. We also got the grand tour of the 'Hill (and Carrborro), which wasn't terribly difficult since neither town is terribly huge. We also got to go behind closed doors at the library where Kim works to see her office. The UNC campus is really nice, even when seen in the dark! Wednesday saw us in Atlanta, visiting Andrea and Jay. By this point in the trip, we were getting a little burnt out from driving, so we probably weren't the most energetic of houseguests. But, we still had a lot of fun in Atlanta. A&J live out near the ancient Zoo burial grounds, so Rob kept a lookout for elephant ghosts (none were seen). |
