The shipwreck museum near Paradise estimates over 6,000 shipwrecks lie in the Great Lakes, which have claimed 30,000 lives since 1679 (we didn't actually go to the museum, but it sounds neat). The "Edmund Fitzgerald," remembered in the Gordon Lightfoot song, sank 17 miles northwest of Whitefish Point in 1975, and rests in 575 feet of water.
