We scored cheap tickets to Mexico -- $9.99 each way from Austin to Cancun on the discount Mexican airline, Viva Aerobus. Despite the cheap price, the flight was fine. We weren't so fond, however, of Cancun. We only saw the airport, so maybe the town is nicer. But the airport was filled with people trying to hustle us with package tours and hotels. That, and really agressive luggage porters.

Fortunately for us, we were quickly at the ferry terminal and on our way to Isla Mujeres, the "Island of Women." This is a small island off the coast of Cancun, about 5 miles long by about 1/2 mile wide. Isla Mujeres was completely laid back and friendly, and was a perfect place to get away for a few days.

We stayed at a place called the Hotel Villa Kiin, formerly Jose Lima's Casa Maya. It was located at the northern tip of the island (Playa Secreto -- although they usually say they're on Playa Norte for the name recognition), on the fringes of the downtown; it was close enough to walk everywhere, but far enough away to be utterly quiet and tranquil at night.

After checking in, we had lunch and spent the rest of the day swimming and lounging.
